Citizens in action: Assistance delivered to families in need

Belgrade, 17 January 2021 - We express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contacted us and responded to our call for action. Household appliances, furniture, firewood, toys for children were collected and delivered to Dema family and to Zorijani family (see here). Aid was collected in the first half of this month, and all collected items were delivered by 15 January.
As a reminder, in the first days of this year, our activists have identified the need for emergency assistance to affected families residing in a local informal settlement (Palilula municipality in Belgrade).
Vast number of Roma families live in this informal settlement, and significant number of them are the Kosovo IDPs. Our interlocutors  told us on site that  a number of residents have lived there for more than 30 years. Hundreds of children are growing up in this settlement.
At the end of December 2020, a fire broke out in the settlement that is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pancevo Bridge, and several homes were completely destroyed.
We are particularly grateful to Mrs. Marijana Toma as she is in fact responsible for the overall success of this action. Another delivery of items for children in this informal settlement is planned to take place in April. We invite you to join us in this endeavor. Immediate relief required: After the fire outbreak families in informal settlements suffer losses

Belgrade, 2 January 2021 - Our activists have identified the need for emergency assistance to affected families residing in a local informal settlement (Palilula municipality in Belgrade). Herewith, we invite you to contact us  as soon as possible if you are able to provide:
 
- equipment for babies (diapers, bedding, etc.)
- construction material (blocks, beams, hardboards, etc.)
- furniture and furnishings

Items will be delivered to the families in need, in coordination with the residents of this informal settlement. We will also report publicly on scope and quality of aid that was collected and delivered.
Please note that we only provide support in coordination of delivery of listed assistance to a specific location. We do not raise funds for this purpose. Financial contributions could be transfered only directly to the families whose property was destroyed in the fire. Contact us and we will refer you to specific individuals and / or families in need of financial assistance.

According to the testimonies of the locals from the settlement, some support from the institutions was promised, but help has not arrived by the moment of our conversation (ten days after the fire).
 
 

Online survey - Who championed the fight against corruption in 2020 in Serbia?

Belgrade, 16 December 2020 - As the year approaches its end, we are taking a look back on this COVID19 virus pandemic marked period. Along with existing ones, new, numerous cases of corruption, as well as new risks of corruption, emerged everywhere in 2020, both globally and locally.
As it was the case in the period before the pandemic many actors established to fight corruption (both from state side and on the non-state side) continued to operate in the country. The same is with other mechanisms (internet, web portals, social networks, etc.) that could serve and / or could contribute to detection and / or prevention of corruption.
Our organisation teamed up with Bureau for Social Research (BIRODI) to develop and to conduct an online survey on the public perception of mechanisms and / or actors that championed the fight against corruption (prevention, disclosure or prosecution) in the Republic of Serbia in 2020, using the online tool "Tvoj stav" ("Your oppinion").
Herewith we kindly ask you to complete this online survey using this link, and to do so not later than Saturday, 16 January 2021.
The survey is anonymous, and it takes no longer than ten minutes to complete it.
When the results are collected, an adequate analysis will be developed and presented to the public later on. Taking into consideration the physical limitations of this online tool, we would like to highlight that this is a pilot endeavor only - several other surveys are currently under preparation.

Strengthening prevention and response of national institutions to human trafficking

Belgrade, 20 November 2020 - What is human trafficking? What do international and domestic laws and regulations say about human trafficking? What is the scope of this problem in the world and how does it manifest itself in Serbia? What are the causes of human trafficking and what are the phases in the process?  What are the human trafficking indicators? Do we have adequate national anti-trafficking policies? What is the national referral mechanism  and how does it work? Those are some of the questions that were answered during the three-hour online training.
 
Our activist Andjelka Markovic held an online training for civil servants on human trafficking at the National Academy for Public Administration in Belgrade. The purpose of the training was to improve the response of Serbian authorities to trafficking in human beings. It was attended by over 30 civil servants from different national-level institutions. Lectures on human trafficking are being regularly held at the Academy now. Check out the annual training plan of the Academy here (in Serbian).

Precondition for peace in focus - Taking part in BELSEC Forum discussions

Belgrade, 20 October 2020 - At the time of the pandemic, right wing extremists "hunt in the dark", offering a false sense of protection and security to already frightened and confused people. Hate speech has become “normalized” as a way of communication, which can lead to radicalization on a larger scale. In 2020, was there a clear vision of a compromise between Belgrade and Pristina? Or there is none of it in sight yet?
Observations like these as well as numerous questions were raised at panels organized during the ongoing, tenth annual Belgrade Security Forum, this year being held online. Jelena Stevancevic participates in Forum discussions on behalf of our organization. BELSEC Forum is taking place from 6 to 27 October, find more information about the event here.

Endorsing the joint candidate for the Commissioner for Protection of Equality of the Republic of Serbia

Belgrade, 24 August 2020 - The Office of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality of the Republic of Serbia has been operating without the Commissioner for three months now, as the mandate of the previous Commissioner had expired on 27 May. Thus for three months now, citizens have been de facto deprived of effective and free protection against discrimination.
 
Today, we have joined the initiative of non-governmental organizations and independent experts initiated by the Roma Center for Democracy from Bujanovac and endorsed  Emila Spasojevic as candidate for the new Commissioner for Protection of Equality of the Republic of Serbia. "Human rights during the state of emergency" Survey - Overview of results

Tri tacke Belgrade, 19 May 2020 - Human rights and fundamental freedoms have been guaranteed by the Constitution and series of ratified international human rights treaties. Derogation could take place during the state of emergency and may be justified by reasons of public danger that endangers the survival of the state or of its citizens. To cross the line between (justified) derogation and the misuse or abuse is not allowed, but may happen nevertheless.

The state of emergency was introduced on 15 March and was abolished on 6 May 2020. Our goal was to examine, to analyze and to document the citizens* perceptions of the state of human rights during this period.
The Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms During the State of Emergency survey was a joint effort of our activists and the Bureau for Social Research (BIRODI). The survey was designed and developed in mid April and it was conducted from 22 April to 2 May, using the online research tool Tvoj stav (Your opinion).
Bojan Stojanovic, Bogdan Krasic, Jelena Stevancevic and Uros Siljanovic contributed to development and implementation of this survey.  

Overview of the results is based on the feedback from 664 individuals from Serbia that took part in the online survey between 22 April and 2 May.

The total number of respondents that completed the survey (from 688 unique IP addresses) is 701.
